Tourism Symbols for Australia

The need for a suite of tourism symbols for use throughout Australia has been a major project of the National Tourism Signing Reference Group (NTSRG) since 2000.

The NTSRG represents all State and Territory road authorities and tourism commissions, as well as the Commonwealth Government, regarding matters of tourism road signing.

It is a sub committee of the Australian Standing Committee on Tourism (ASCOT).

The attached symbols comprise the first suite of nationally approved tourism symbols. This is an organic process and other symbols may be added in future, as the need and funding arises.

All symbols have been consumer tested according to Australian Standards and have been adopted for use by all Australian states and territories. However, some states/ territories may choose not to use some symbols and, therefore, you should consult the officer in charge of tourism road signing at your State/ Territory road authority to determine whether they are applicable in your jurisdiction.

Similarly, while base criteria for the use of each symbol has been agreed to at a national level, the various states and territories may choose to apply additional criteria in order to meet local needs and/or policies. You should consult your state/ territory road authority and/or tourism commission for clarification about how they are to be applied in your jurisdiction.

These symbols are copyright protected, but they may be used by authorised individuals, agencies and commercial organisations  only for the purpose for which they are intended and according to the base criteria.

The NTSRG intends that this project will move Australia towards a more consistent and uniform approach to tourism symbols, especially applying to road signing. It is also hoped that the nation's map, guide book, directory and website publishers will also make use of these symbols, in order to further consolidate their use and to improve user comprehension. For this purpose, a separate file of the symbols without borders or background colours has also been provided on this CD.
